Sign posted off A34 at Newtownbutler . The setting for Crom Castle is an intricate maze-like landscape of woods, lawns, lakeshore inlets and island and is certain to intrigue the seeker after picturesque parkland . The visitor is led on through the park to discover a series of ornamental buildings which enhance the parkspace: Gad Island tower, a schoolhouse, a boathouse, a hexagonal tea house and the romantic ruins of Old Crom Castle with a pair of ancient yew trees, nearby, one female, the other male . Please note, the new castle is not open to the public.
The parkland was designed in 1838 by William Sawery Gilpin (1762 - 1843), a famous English parkland designer, best remembered today for his useful book Practical Hints on Landscaping Gardening (1832). Cottages on the estate are let for self-catering holidays.
Estate open April - Sept: daily 10am - 6pm, Sun from noon.
