| Markethill, Co. Armagh Phone : +44 (0) 28 3755 1277 The visitor's interest is focused on a few key elements of the old estate where the surviving house is an enormous Norman revival castle . Gosford's arboretum was established in the 1820s and contains a magnificent specimen of the Himalayan fir, Abies spectabilis, with a girth the equal of any in the British Isles . There are also fine examples of the Noble fir and the rare flowering shrubs and a sundial . The demesne has many associations with Jonathan Swift and is mentioned in his poems . A pleasant walk from the castle leads to the The Dean's Chair, a particularly sheltered spot near ornamental ponds where Swift could sit in the shelter of a circular yew hedge . Nearby are traditional breeds of poultry in open paddocks, deerpark, and ornamental pigeons in dovecotes . There is limited wheelchair access . Open daily 10am - dusk. Entrance charge. |
