Steelple Road, Antrim, Co. Antrim Antrim Round Tower is about one thousand years old and is one of the finest of its kind in Ireland . It tapers from a base 50ft in circumference to a height of 93ft and is the remains of part of a Celtic Monastic Settlement, built to protect the monks and their treasures from marauding Vikings . Folklore tells of a witch who jumped form the summit of the Round Tower to express her dissatisfaction over its construction . She apparently landed on a large stone leaving in it the impression of the knee and elbow . To this day the rock is known as the witches stone and it is located adjacent to the Round Tower . Free access all year round. |
