In a beautiful parkland setting sloping to the sea, with panoramic views over Antrim's coast, the old walled garden at Carnfunnock has been newly planted and laid out in contemporary style with meandering paths and labour-saving planting . In the past gardens were often laid out for entertainment as much as for horticulture, and that is true of this new one . From an amphitheatre for outdoor concerts, a path leads up the hill to a hornbeam maze laid out in the shape of the map of Ireland . The Time Garden features a number of different sundials, demonstrating the techniques that men through the ages have devised to measure time, one dial is set out along the ground so that the visitor's own shadow can be used to point out the time . Below the garden, with views out over the bay is a small restaurant .
